Top 50 Be Thankful Quotes

Top 50 Be Thankful Quotes

…And why of all the attitudes you can acquire, it’s the attitude of gratitude that can be the most important and life-changing.

The following is a hybrid list of quotes, picture quotes, and poems on being thankful.  The list is split up into three sections: quotes on the power of giving thanks (why it’s important); quotes on how to adopt an attitude of gratitude (how you can be more thankful in your everyday life); and quotes on why you should give thanks now (taking action).

We do not feel like this list is all-encompassing by any means, but we do feel like it is a very powerful list that, when read slowly and thoroughly can completely change a person’s outlook on life and the circumstances that they’re dealing with on a day-to-day basis.

The key to getting the most out of this list (or out of any list for that matter) is to make sure you stop and think deeply about any quote or saying that makes you nod your head or say, ‘Ooooooo.’  Subtle cues like these indicate that the quote or saying resonated with you and all you have to do is figure out why and how you can apply it’s insight into your life in a meaningful way.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy the 50 quotes we selected for this list below and hope that by the time you finish reading you have a new found appreciation for everything you have in your life!

On the Power of Giving Thanks:

———— ———— ———— ————

“It is impossible to feel grateful and depressed in the same moment.” ~ Naomi Williams

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” ~ Cicero

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” ~ Oscar Wilde

“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” ~ Mark Twain

“A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.” ~ Saint Basil

“If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.” ~ Harold Kushner

“Gratitude is something of which none of us can give too much.  For on the smiles, the thanks we give, our little gestures of appreciation, our neighbors build their philosophy of life.” ~ A. J. Cronin

“You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you” ~ Sarah Ban Breathnack

“None of those material possessions do anything to make your life any better… I know a lot of people who have a lot of everything, and they’re absolutely the most miserable people in the world.  So it won’t do anything for you unless you’re a happy person and can have peace with yourself.” ~ Lenny Kravitz

“Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have—life itself.” ~ Walter Anderson

 In Picture Quotes:

Appreciation can make a day, even a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.

A good life is when you smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realize how blessed you are for what you have.

gratitute turns what we have into enough image

In a Poem:

“I like to walk alone on country paths,
rice plants and wild grasses on both sides,
putting each foot down on the earth
in mindfulness, knowing
that I walk on the wondrous earth.
In such moments, existence is a miraculous
and mysterious reality.

People usually consider walking on water
or in thin air a miracle.
But I think the real miracle
is not to walk either on water or in thin air,
but to walk on earth.
Every day we are engaged in a miracle
which we don’t even recognize:
a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves,
the black, curious eyes of a child–
our own two eyes.
All is a miracle.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

On How to Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude:

———— ———— ———— ————

“We need to regularly stop and take stock; to sit down and determine within ourselves which things are worth valuing and which things are not; which risks are worth the cost and which are not. Even the most confusing or hurtful aspects of life can be made more tolerable by clear seeing and by choice.” ~ Epictetus

“Do not indulge in dreams of having what you have not, but reckon up the chief of the blessings you do possess, and then thankfully remember how you would crave for them if they were not yours.” ~ Marcus Aurelius

“Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end of having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

“If we magnified blessings as much as we magnify disappointments, we would all be much happier.” ~ John Wooden

“Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” ~ Guillaume Apollinaire

“Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.” ~ Alphonse Karr

“It isn’t what you have in your pocket that makes you thankful, but what you have in your heart.” ~ Author Unknown

“Gratitude doesn’t change the scenery. It merely washes clean the glass you look through so you can clearly see the colors.” ~ Richelle E. Goodrich

“Make it a habit to tell people thank you.  To express your appreciation,  sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return.  Truly appreciate those around you,  and you’ll soon find many others around you.  Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.” ~ Ralph Marston

“It’s the recognition that other people’s problems, their pain and frustrations, are every bit as real as our own – often far worse. In recognizing this fact and trying to offer some assistance, we open our hearts and greatly enhance our sense of gratitude.” ~ Richard Carlson

In Picture Quotes:

Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have.

When life is sweet... Say thank you and celebrate. And when life is bitter, say thank you and grow.

Each day I am thankful for: Nights that turned into mornings; Friends that turned into family; Dreams that turned into reality; and likes that turned into love.

Don't waste your time on things that you think you want because there is always someone out there who needs it much more than you could ever possibly know.

Why to be thankful by Dr. Seuss :)

In a Poem:

“Let us rise up and be thankful,
for if we didn’t learn a lot today,
at least we learned a little,
and if we didn’t learn a little,
at least we didn’t get sick,
and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die;
so, let us all be thankful.”

~ Buddha

On Why You Should Give Thanks Now:

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” ~ Lao Tzu

“We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not figures on a dial.  We should count time by heart-throbs.  He most lives who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best.” ~ Phillip James Bailey

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~ Melody Beattie

“How easily we can forget how precious life is!  So long as we can remember, we’ve just been here, being alive.  Unlike other things for which we have a good comparison– black to white, day to night, good to bad– we are so immersed in life that we can see it only in the context of itself.  We don’t see life as compared to anything, to not-being, for example, to never having been born.  Life just is. But life itself is a gift.  It’s a compliment just being born: to feel, breathe, think, play, dance, sing, work, make love, for this particular lifetime.  Today, let’s give thanks for life.  For life itself. For simply being born!” ~ Daphne Rose Kingma

In Picture Quotes:

What Good is Gratitude?

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.

Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. ~ Oscar Wilde (Be Thankful Picture Quote)

Take time to be thankful for everything that you have. You can always have more, but you could also have less.

What are YOU grateful for?

In a Poem:

“Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.
It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are
also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.”

~ Author Unknown

“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.” ~ Tecumseh

What if today, we were just grateful for everything?

Application Exercises:

———— ———— ———— ————

Level 1 Challenge:  Create a daily reminder on your smartphone or a make mini-sized poster where you write down one of the following messages: ‘Today, I am thankful;’I have so much in my life to be thankful for;‘ ‘Before you move on you must think of one thing that you are thankful for RIGHT NOW!‘ or a similar type message that you make sure you see on a regular basis.  The goal with this challenge is to try and put you back into a, ‘gratitude state of mind’ every time you see it.

Level 2 Challenge:  Create your own, ‘Be Thankful’ poster or collage that you can read every day.  Fill it with quotes, sayings, and pictures that resonate with you and make sure you put the poster in a place where you can read it every day.  Creativity and daily modifications encouraged.  Pictures of your creations in the comment section below would be awesome…!

Level 3 Challenge:  Create a Gratitude Log.  Every day for the next 30 days (starting today!) write down three NEW things you are thankful for.  By writing down three new things you’re grateful for every day for 30 days you can literally re-wire your brain to start scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.  It is a little bit time intensive but is a challenge I believe is worth taking.

If you will be accepting any of our challenges, take the first big step by giving us a verbal commitment and commenting below with a simple, “Level 1/2/3 Challenge ACCEPTED!”  And of course, give us feedback on the effectiveness of the challenges and how you feel that it is or is not changing your gratitude ways!

David Steindl-Rast: Want to be happy? Be grateful

The one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy, says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. And happiness, he suggests, is born from gratitude. An inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful. A talk brought to you by TED.

    • Be grateful that you are alive to see that pop up!

  • Thank you so much for this web site. I have spent the summer organizing a women’s cancer support group for my community. Since it is near Thanksgiving, I decided to google Thankfulness for some help. When a person is told “you have cancer”, we forget so many times to be thankful for the things we do have. You can find us on Molalla Area Women’s Cancer Support Facebook page.

    • I can only imagine what it must be like hearing that you have cancer. My deepest regards to your support group, community, and efforts. Sounds like you’re making a difference in the lives of those who could really use help – and it makes me feel deeply grateful that my efforts have reached the same lives that you’re working to help. Expressing gratitude only helps and I hope that you continue to find light along your journey forward! All the best 🙂

  • I really needed this. I have received too many blessings that I am not grateful for. Thank you

Showing more gratitude is something we could all do more often and is something that will always serve to improve our lives. For, as Naomi Williams reminds us in the first quote listed above (#50) – it is impossible to feel grateful and depressed in the same moment – one of my favorite gratitude reminders of all time. Cheers to showing more gratitude and thank you for your comment! 🙂

  • I want to share my gratitude for all of these wonderful and meaningful quotes. I searched for guidance for an important conversation I need to have with my niece about gratitud. The generations seem to have less and less interest in showing gratitude. So again thank you!
