Get Bored More Often (Beyond the Quote)

“‘I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless. The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.’” ~ Louis CK

This is an awesome quote.  Probably one of my Top 10 favorites of all time.  It reminds me that being bored is a state of mind and that you can only be ‘bored’ when you allow yourself to be.  A growing trend in the world today is that people are literally becoming addicted to passive entertainment.  The form of entertainment where people sit back, shut down, and let screens suck away all of the life out of them.  For the most part, you literally do nothing while you watch TV.  You’re no better than a brain dead zombie.

Now, sometimes I think it’s okay to shut down and unwind in front of the TV after a long day and it can help settle a stressed out, flustered mind.  I also do believe in educational TV and think there are certainly some high quality programs out there that stimulate thinking.  My problem however, is that I see too many people who just don’t know what to do with themselves without it!  If there’s no screen in front of them they’re IRRITATED, MOODY, UPSET, ANTSY, FRUSTRATED, ETC – as if being stuck in their own mind was the worse thing in the world!

I think we need to take a step back and learn to appreciate being bored again.   Because it is during these times of boredom that your imagination is allowed to run free.  Think about it.  When do you find your imagination running wild?  When do you find you have your best ideas?  When do get really creative? If you’re like me, then probably during the times when there are no forms of passive entertainment around and you’re simply stuck in your own mind.  For example, long hot showers; long car rides or road trips; long sleepless nights in bed; long walks; essentially during any long period of time when you’re doing a whole bunch of nothing…  My suggestion to you and yours?  Get bored more often and get comfortable with it!  It could do us all some good!  I’ve had some of my very best ideas during times like these… Maybe it’ll lead you to yours?!
